Blaine, Birch Bay and and Lummi Flats Field Trip (11/17/01) Highlights

We had 12 birders on this Saturday field trip on a beautiful day.

We crossed paths at the exit 207 rest area off I-5 with Bob Sundstrom's trip with the Seattle Audubon Society. Fortunately he was going to a different area. We started at the bay and pier at Blaine, continued around Drayton Harbor to Semiahmoo, Birch Bay, Lake Terrell, Lummi Flats and ended at the West 90 in Samish Flats.

We recorded 41 species in the Blaine area and ended with 65 for the trip, the last being a Short-eared Owl at the West 90. Other special birds were Tundra and Trumpeter Swans, hundreds of Northern Pintail, Harlequin Ducks at two locations, Long-tailed Ducks (Oldsquaw), 6 Bald Eagle, 9 Northern Harrier, 25 Red-tailed hawks, 4 Rough-legged Hawks, 1 Peregrine Falcon and 1 Western Meadowlark.
