2001 Christmas Bird Count (12/15/01) Highlights

We had a rainy day this year, but all seven areas got covered.

The species total for each group was:

North Snoqualmie - 43

South Snoqualmie - 43

Marymoor Park - 52

Pine Lake Plateau - 50

Fall City - 41

Sammamish State Park - 43

Phantom Lake - 45

and backyard lists 39.

The overall total species was 86 our second highest; we had 87 in 1995. The total bird count was 15,575 which was the lowest since 1993 except for 9961 in 2000. The backyard reports added seven species not seen in any of the seven areas: Mourning Dove, Great Horned Owl, Bushtit, Anna’s Hummingbird, Pileated Woodpecker, Mountain Chickadee and Purple Finch.

Notable changes from 1985 to 2000 were:

Mountain Chickadee - 1; the only previous listing was in 1998
Brown Creeper – 13 for highest count; 5 in 1995 was previous high
Rock Dove – 197 is lowest since 1986
Mew Gull – 3,099 is highest count
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 139 is highest count
Golden-crowned Kinglet – 269 is highest count
Great Horned Owl - 2; with only previous listing of 1 in 1993
Spotted Sandpiper - 1; only reported in two other years
Common Raven – 5 is highest count; 4 were seen in 1999
Trumpeter Swan – 27 is highest count; previous high was 11 in 1991
American Wigeon – 133 is lowest count; previous low was 269 in 1986
Hermit Thrush – 1; only reported two other years, 1992 and 1993
