Viewing GBHEs Nesting at the Kenmore P&R by Hugh Jennings

Viewing GBHEs Nesting at the Kenmore P&R by Hugh Jennings

The weather was unexpectedly good for about 50 people that showed up to view the nesting colony of Great Blue Herons (GBHE) between 11:00 a.m. and noon.

About 40 GBHE nests were visible with at least 30 herons present. People began showing up about 10:40 and they had many questions. Many of the people were not aware of this nesting colony before coming this morning. The people  were able to enjoy a view of the herons through scopes set up by Joyce Meyer and Hugh Jennings. They were amazed to be able to see them so close and thanked us for giving them this opportunity to view the birds.  A few other Eastside Audubon members were present also. Copies of the April 1999 bird-of-the-month article on the Great Blue Heron were handed out which answered many of the questions. A little before noon the people began walking the short distance to the Kenmore Library to see Mike West's powerpoint program on the Great Blue Herons. The library was full, about 30 seats and the rest standing up. Many of the attendees complimented Mike on the excellent presentation and I am sure we will be invited back to do this next year. We have done this for about five years now and it has been well received.
