Sequim Area Field Trip (Feb. 20, 2010) Highlights

Brian Bell led seven birders on a good trip to the Sequim area on Saturday, 20 February 2010. It started out chilly (32F) on the ferry from Edmonds with a north wind and light chop. This made seeing the birds difficult, and numbers seemed to be down.

But we did see DOUBLE-CRESTED and BRANDT'S CORMORANTs, PIGEON GUILLEMOT, MEW and GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULLs. Part was across to Kingston a small group of BRANT flew north, and a single RED-BREASTED MERGANSER flew south. As we came into Kingston there were WESTERN GREBEs, SURF SCOTERs, PELAGIC CORMORANT, more DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, and a pair of BARROW'S GOLDENEYES.

We made our first stop at Port Gamble and looked out over the bay. There were more SURF SCOTERs, some distant WHITE-WINGED SCOTERs, BUFFLEHEAD, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, AMERICAN WIGEON, HORNED GREBEs, COMMON GOLDENEYE, GREAT BLUE HERON, BELTED KINGFISHER, COMMON LOON, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, SONG SPARROW, SPOTTED TOWHEE, BLACK-CAPPED and CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEEs, G0LDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and HOUSE FINCH.

At Salsbury Point we saw more BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, STELLER'S JAY, VARIED THRUSH, NORTHERN FLICKER, and had a beautiful PEREGRINE FALCON perched in the large snag. Coming into Sequim we saw lots of ROCK PIGEONs and a couple of RED-TAILED HAWKs.

We pushed on to Railroad Bridge Park in Sequim. We saw more chickadees, GOLDEN-CROWNED and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETs, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, SONG SPARROW, SPOTTED TOWHEE, ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD, COMMON RAVEN, HOUSE FINCH, GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW, and heard WINTER WREN. We had PINE SISKIN overhead.

At the ponds on Kitchen Dick Road we saw MALLARD, RING-NECKED DUCK, NORTHERN SHOVELER, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREATER and LESSER SCAUP (one of each), AMERICAN WIGEON, BUFFLEHEAD, AMERICAN COOT, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, HOUSE FINCH, and EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE. A NORTHERN HARRIER flew over.

At Dungeness Landing County Park although the tide was out, we found cormorants, bufflehead, GLAUCOUS-WINGED, WESTERN, THAYER'S and RING-BILLED GULLs, BALD EAGLE, PEREGRINE FALCON, and lots of DUNLIN and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERs. On the way to Three Crabs we saw several MOURNING DOVEs, and with few birds a Three Crabs (nothing new and most of the birds we had already seen were way out).

Down at Port Williams we saw mostly empty water with a few BUFFLEHEAD, but had a large group of BREWER'S and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDs and EUROPEAN STARLINGs on the way in. As we drove down Schmuck Road we saw some swans in the field. There were both TRUMPETER and TUNDRA SWANs, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED and CANADA GEESE. At John Wayne Marina we saw more BUFFLEHEAD, AMERICAN WIGEON, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, and waaay out a nice group of LONG-TAILED DUCKs.

At various places along the way we saw AMERICAN CROW, and AMERICAN ROBIN.

It was a good day, sunny and warming up to 55F. We saw a total of 67 species.
