Vaux's Swifts at Monroe (September 8, 2007)
On this Sat. evening at the Frank Wagner Elementary School in Monroe there were about 60-70 people there to observe the Vaux's Swifts evening ritual.
There were a number of East Lake WA, Pilchuck and Seattle Audubon members plus others that had heard about the event in the Bird Note radio program, or read it on the web site or in one of the newspapers. The swifts did their flight ritual of circling and diving over the chimney for over one hour before they started dropping feet first down into the chimney. It is estimated there were at least 3-4000 swifts involved and they all made it into the chimney by 8 p.m. While watching the swifts we also saw the following birds: Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk, Barn Swallows, Steller's Jay and European Starling.
