Chelan Ridge Raptor Migration
The US Forest Service invites us to visit Chelan Ridge on Saturday, September 17, the weekend before the Raptor Migration program. This is the height of the songbird migration, so we will see both raptors and songbirds.
An educator will be present to answer our questions. Bring a lunch for this all day trip. Meet before 7:30 a.m. at north end of Issaquah P&R: (I-90, exit 15, turn right (south) go to 2nd or 3rd light, then left into P&R lot).

We will take the ferry from Mukilteo and work the passage, and then look at forest, wetland, marsh, salt water, grasslands, and rocky edges. We'll be searching out loons, grebes, alcids, waterfowl, raptors, shorebirds, and passerines as we work our way the length of the island. If we have time we will stop at the Stanwood sewer ponds on the way home. Come prepared for any type of weather, bring lunch and fluids. Spotting scope helpful. Malheur National Wildlife Refuge (May 18-23, 2009)
The refuge lies in southeastern Oregon, about 30 miles south of Burns, at an elevation of 4,100 feet. Burns is about 500 miles from Bellevue. The refuge, 183,000 acres, is composed of meadows, ponds and extensive wetlands surrounded by sage uplands and basalt rimrock. It is a major resting, nesting, and feeding area on the Pacific Flyway and is on Roger Tory Peterson's list of the ten best birding areas in the U.S. More than 320 species of birds and many species of mammals have been observed on the refuge. We will visit the main birding areas within the refuge, and usually see100-130 species.

This 11-mile roundtrip Navaho Pass hike in the Teanaway River area is a great bird hike. Hiking time is about 6-7 hours, with a gradual elevation gain of 3,000 feet, on a very nice trail with some shade and lots of light, reaching a high point of 6,000 feet (where we’ll eat lunch overlooking the magnificent Stuart Mountain Range). NAVAHO PASS BIRDING HIKE (Tuesday, July 19, 2011)
Navaho Pass, in the North Fork Teanaway River area of Eastern Washington, is listed as one of the best bird hikes and is geared for fit, long-distance hiker-birders because it's 11 miles roundtrip. It's not a difficult hike, but the distance makes for a long day of hiking and can be tiring after 8-9 hours on the trail.
