Marymoor Bird Festival

King County Executive Ron Sims, Christy and Kids Cutting the Ribbon for the Grand Opening of the Audubon BirdLoop Trail

King County Executive Ron Sims, Christy and Kids Cutting the Ribbon for the Grand Opening of the Audubon BirdLoop Trail

The first Eastside Audubon Marymoor Bird Festival was held on August 2, 2008, celebrating the grand opening of the Audubon BirdLoop at Marymoor Park.  Close to 200 visitors took part in bird, native plant and dragonfly walks and many more enjoyed the booths, kid’s activities, and music.

Nature Walks

The festival featured bird, dragonfly, and native plant walks through the meadow to the lake platform.  Walks began at the meadow kiosk, where visitors could study a trail map and posters showing the most common birds, wildlife and native plants.  Our new BirdLoop and Birds of Marymoor brochures were also available.

Festival Green

Eastside Audubon members set up scopes on the festival green and introduced newcomers to close up views of birds. Nearby, people lounged on the grass listening to the music of Tinker’s Dram and eating Grand Opening cake.
The Youth Education tent teemed with eager kids (and adults) making bird buttons, having their faces painted, and learning about birds.  The Chapter tent featured activity displays and membership information.

Opening Ceremonies

Ceremonies featured Ron Sims, King County Executive, along with Christy Anderson, Eastside Audubon President; Jim Rettig, Birdloop project manager; and Michael Hobbs, Friends of Marymoor.

Vendors

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, King County Parks, Pilchuck Audubon Society, Washington Native Plant Society, League of Women Voters, Earth Ministry, Cascade Bicycle Club, and Nature Vision.  Festival sponsors, REI and PCC Natural Markets also had display booths. Clark, Raymond & Co. was also a sponsor.

Check out Bird Festival a Spectacular Success! for more details and to see names of all the volunteers that made this festival possible.
