Kids and Nature
We believe that children who learn about birds and the environment at an early age are more likely to become adult stewards of the environment. Committee members are dedicated to fostering an appreciation of fauna and flora in all students.
The Challenge
Develop in youth a sense of stewardship of the earth (click on link to read more). How Do We Meet This Challenge?
Throughout the year, volunteers give presentations and classes at schools, camps, science fairs, parks and nature centers. During the summer, we partner with the Kirkland Parks Department and sponsor workshops and field trips for their campers.
We present workshops on a variety of bird-related subjects, for a range of ages. Read more in our Letter to Educators. All presentations are interactive, hands-on and can be adapted to the needs of students. A walk to look for and identify birds can be added to any of the presentations.
In addition, the committee provides grants and scholarships for teachers, for high school seniors, and for low-income students to attend camps with an environmental focus.
Meetings
Our Youth Education Committee meets from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.
