In the quiet of the woods the bubbling song of the Ruby-crowned Kinglet erupted, and the high trill of the Brown Creeper signaled its presence. The hormonal drive to breed had birds singing regardless of the weather.

Snowy Owl

This large white owl is 20-23 inches (the size of a Great Horned Owl) and is merely a winter visitor here.  Its four letter code is SNOW.  It has a rounded head and yellow eyes.

Cassin’s Auklet is one of the most common and widespread alcids. It has a world population of 3.5 million strong (Opar), but few people see them because they spend their lives at sea and in the Arctic.

At the time the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, MA the Passenger Pigeon was probably the most abundant bird in North America (Kaufman). Enormous nomadic flocks of these pigeons numbering in the millions roamed around the eastern two-thirds of the continent eating beechnuts, acorns, grains, and berries.

The Black-footed Albatross is the only albatross commonly seen from the North American coastline and we have the good fortune of having it off the Washington coast in July and August.
