May Wrap-Up: Birdathon, Big Days, and a Post-COVID Milestone

May Wrap-Up
Birdathon, Big Days, and a Post-COVID Milestone

It’s been a busy and rewarding month for Eastside Audubon. We hosted 15 events—our most since the pandemic—and welcomed around 200 participants.

Birdathon 2025 was led by Vice President Jeremy Lucas, with support from President John Spilker and members of the board. Together, we raised about $14,000, which will be matched by the Robidoux Foundation. We're currently about $2,000 short of last year’s total, but donations are still coming in.

Despite concerns from other nonprofits about a tough fundraising climate, our total fundraising is up 8% over last year. We’re especially grateful for our supporters. We saw a 56% increase in the number of donations, even though the average gift was about 30% smaller. Your support helps fund beginner and children’s birding classes and ongoing conservation projects in Marymoor Park and Fall City.

The month’s highlight was the Big Day birding challenge, featuring two teams led by Jeremy Lucas and Jim Rettig. Both teams recorded impressive sightings and inspired others to get involved.

Indian Paintbrush on Vendovi Island by John Spilker

Another standout was a trip to Vendovi Island, led by John Spilker. Twenty birders explored this rare gem in the San Juans, known for its native wildflowers and absence of invasive mammals like deer and rabbits.

“What got me,” John shared, “was how beautiful the island still is, even though we visited three years ago. The vegetation is so lush and delicate. It really looks different from other islands.”

Kendall Wiggins led bird walks to Nisqually and Tolt-MacDonald Park.

“At Nisqually we saw 54 species and two very cute fawns,” she said. “The highlights were four Whimbrels close to the path and some persistent Cinnamon Teals.”

She plans to return: “Nisqually is my favorite place in Washington to see birds!”

The 2025 Birdathon story isn’t over. We’d love to hear your highlights! Please join us at the Ice Cream Social on June 26 to share your Birdathon stories.
