Global Big Day Bird Count - May 11, 2024

Join with Eastside Audubon in Helping Scientists Record Bird Populations

Calling all birders!

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology needs your help to collect critical bird population data on Global Big Day on May 11.
Eastside Audubon is encouraging all members to join the EAS team to collect Eastside data.

“Every observation helps,” says Eastside Audubon president Jeremy Lucas. “Even 30 minutes in your backyard or a local park helps the understanding of bird populations on the Eastside. Just file a simple online report.”

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology organizes the 24-hour event to collect data. This helps conservation efforts by providing insights into habitat needs, migration patterns, and population changes.

Last year, Global Big Day brought 51,000 birders together from 201 countries. The participants submitted 132,000 checklists through the eBird application, a phone app developed by Cornell. This set a world record for a single day of birding. In King County, 136 birders identified 155 species.

“Can you help us surpass last year’s record?” asks Lucas.

Register for the Eastside Audubon Global Big Day team. A suggested donation of $25 is encouraged to help fund projects like the Marymoor bird habitat restoration.

The birders with the top results will be acknowledged in an upcoming edition of The Corvid Crier Newsletter.
