Photo of the Month: April

Jesse Gaulin Earns Eastside Audubon's April Photo of the Month Honor

Jesse Gaulin is the Eastside Audubon Photo Group’s latest Photographer of the Month for his image of a Varied Thrush taken at Juanita Bay Park in Kirkland. This marks Jesse’s first time receiving the monthly recognition.

“This image was taken during one of my early outings after transitioning to a mirrorless setup,” Jesse said. “I was getting acquainted with the new system — refining my focus technique, experimenting with settings, and incorporating back button focus into my workflow.”

He captured the image on a rainy day while tracking the bird handheld through thick branches. The photo was taken using a Canon R10 paired with a Sigma 150-600mm lens. Camera settings included ISO 6400, shutter speed 1/1000 sec, and aperture f/9.0. The final image was edited and denoised in Adobe Lightroom.

The Varied Thrush, often elusive and shy, is a challenging subject to photograph. Jesse followed this bird for several minutes as it moved branch to branch, using the opportunity to practice tracking and manual focus features with his new gear.
