Green Tip of the Month
Remember to Clean your Birdbath
As summer begins on June 21st, it is essential to prepare our birdbaths. The Seattle area has experienced a significant deficit in its annual precipitation (nearly 5 inches), and the summer forecast predicts warmer and drier conditions than usual, according to NOAA. Maintaining a clean and filled birdbath is an excellent way to assist our avian friends in staying clean and hydrated.
Currently, I maintain three birdbaths and have recently replaced one with a lightweight metal bath, which facilitates easier cleaning. Although cleaning a birdbath may not be enjoyable and there are numerous other activities I could engage in, our feathered friends greatly benefit from this care. When cleaning a birdbath, it is advisable to wear gloves and clothing suitable for getting dirty or wet, as personal experience has taught me.
It is recommended to clean the birdbath every few days. Utilize distilled white vinegar diluted in water and thoroughly scrub the birdbath. Rinse and repeat as necessary, and allow the birdbath to dry before refilling. If drying naturally is not feasible, use a clean cloth to dry it. While bleach can be used for cleaning, I personally avoid it to protect the soil and flowers, but this decision is at your discretion.
Position the birdbath in a shaded area to keep the water cool and consider placing it near a branch to provide birds with a safe resting place. Additionally, I have small water pods available for insects to ensure they remain hydrated.
Happy Summer!
