Photo of the Month: November

First Time Presenter Liliana Aguila Wins the Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month Honor for November

All photos were shot using a Nikon Z 8 and a 600 mm Nikkor Z 600 mm lens with a 1.4x extender.

Liliana Aguila won the Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month honor for a series of shots of a short-eared owl she photographed at Marymoor Park in early November. This was the first time Liliana presented her work to the photography group and only the second meeting she attended.

She discovered the owl’s presence at Marymoor by observing another bird watcher who was watching the owl perched in a tree and surrounded by crows.

“I slowly got closer and closer not knowing what she was looking at but not wanting to disturb the crows,” she says. “Then I realized there was a short-eared owl in the tree under the canopy of crows.”

She shot a few photos before the owl flew away to hunt.

All photos were shot using a Nikon Z 8 and a 600 mm Nikkor Z 600 mm lens with a 1.4x extender.

Liliana returned a few days later and again saw the owl while being pursued by crows. “This time it flew right along the trail, stopped on a bundle of branches, and then flew back up to the observation mound,” she says. “Even a Cooper’s Hawk sat nearby watching the action. It was quite an experience and I again managed to capture a few images of this beautiful bird.”

Liliana is new to bird photography. She started to observe birds in her backyard about a year ago and took up bird photography about seven months ago.
