Photo of the Month: October

Gary Luhm Wins the Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month Honor for October

Lens: 400 mm | Exposure: 1/2500 sec | Aperture: f/5.6 | ISO: 1250

Gary Luhm won the Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month honor in October for his photos of Green Herons shot along the Sammamish River in Kenmore. This was the third time Gary won the award.

Gary, an expert kayaker, has gone birding while paddling in environments as varied as Alaska and Baja, Mexico.

“I frequently kayak the Sammamish River in Kenmore for bird photography,” he says. “In mid-September, near the river mouth where it enters Lake Washington, I discovered three juvenile Green Herons. In Western Washington, young Green Herons fledge mid-July and into August, and after a few weeks are on their own. The birds here hunted independently. Occasionally chased each other like they had territorial issues.”
