Leah Turner won the Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month honor in August for her photos of puffins shot near Smith Island in the Salish Sea. This was the second time Leah has won the award.

The shots feature Tufted Puffins and Horned Puffins. They were taken from the deck of a whale-watching tour boat in July.

“They are so much fun to watch and photograph,” Leah says.  “They’re aptly nicknamed ‘clowns of the sea’ because of their bright plumage and bubbly personalities! “

The birds are known for their ability to carry up to 12 fish in their bills at one time, which allows them to efficiently bring back food for their young, she adds.
