Photo Details
Focal Length: 500mm | Shutter Speed: 1/1200sec | Aperture: f/5.6
Leah Turner is the latest winner of the Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month award for her photograph of a Victoria’s Riflebird taken in the Atherton Tablelands of Queensland, Australia.
Leah spent several hours watching a male riflebird’s display site deep within the rainforest. “After some time, the male showed up and performed for a female,” she says. “That allowed me to get the perfect shot.”
Victoria’s Riflebird (Ptiloris victoriae) is an Australian bird-of-paradise known for its striking courtship behavior. Males raise their wings, clap them in a sweeping display, and flash their iridescent blue-green throat patches in an effort to attract a mate. The species lives in the rainforests of North Queensland and feeds mainly on fruits and insects.
Leah captured the moment using a Nikon D850 at a 500 mm focal length with a shutter speed of 1/1200 sec and an aperture of f/5.6. The image shows the riflebird in mid-display, highlighting the vivid colors and distinctive posture that make this species remarkable.
