Leah Turner Wins Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month for March
Leah Turner has been named the Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month winner for March, recognized for her stunning image of a Great Gray Owl taken at the Sax-Zim Bog in Northern Minnesota.
Leah described the experience as "magical," as she spent a weekend photographing the owls of the Northern Boreal Forest. “This winter, Minnesota saw an irruption of northern owl species, including the Northern Hawk Owl and Great Gray Owl, meaning they ventured further south than they normally do and in much larger numbers than previous years,” she says.
The winning photo features a cooperative Great Gray Owl that alternated between a few different pine tree perches, sometimes as close as 15 feet from her lens. “These birds are so majestic and massive, and truly don’t seem like a real creature when you get up close to them,” Leah adds.
