Dorothy Sowell is the Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month winner for June for her photo of an Evening Grosbeak, captured near her home in Issaquah.

“On May 22, I heard an unfamiliar bird call and identified it as an Evening Grosbeak using Merlin Bird ID,” Dorothy said. “Then I began looking around and spotted a flock of Evening Grosbeaks at our neighbor’s feeder.”

The birds remained in the area for several days, spending time at the feeder and in the surrounding trees. For Dorothy, the encounter was a special one. “This bird was a lifer for me!” she said.

She photographed the Grosbeak using a Canon R5 camera with a Canon RF 100–500mm lens. The image was taken at 500mm, ISO 1250, shutter speed 1/500 sec, and f/8. The photo was shot handheld in natural light.
