Don Larkin won the Eastside Audubon Photo of the Month award for March for his photograph of a Hairy Woodpecker taken at Weaselhead Flats Natural Environment Park in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This marked another recognition for Don’s extensive and impressive work with bird photography.

“I waited and hoped the woodpecker would make her way to the right side of the tree, and she read my mind,” Don said.

Don photographed the female Hairy Woodpecker as it moved from tree to tree searching for insects. He noted the species has a wide range across Alaska, Canada, the United States, and into Mexico and Central America, and is sometimes seen at birdfeeders. Males can be identified by a red spot on the back of the head. While capturing the image, Don noticed old leaves between him and the subject. He adjusted his position to include them in the frame, adding color to an otherwise gray scene. In one image, the holes made by the bird are visible where it had been pecking moments before.

The photo was taken with a shutter speed of 1/3000 second, aperture of f/6.3 and ISO 6400.
