“‘Have you seen a trogon?’ is a common question among birders exploring Madera Canyon southeast of Tucson, Arizona,” Kyle said. “Indeed a couple people said they had heard the bird ‘just up the trail.’ My wife and I heard its distinctive song coming from somewhere on the mountainside beyond 6,000 feet elevation. After listening to the singing for awhile, we began hiking back downhill, not expecting to get any visual of the bird.

“Suddenly one appeared, perched directly in front of us, no more than ten feet off the ground. It moved slowly from branch to branch, foraging and singing among the understory, unbothered by our quiet presence. For a long few minutes, it was just us and this incredible bird.”

Kyle captured the winning image using a Canon EOS Rebel T3i with a Sigma 150-600mm lens. The photograph was taken at a focal length of 600mm with a shutter speed of 1/800 second, aperture of f/9.0 and ISO 4000.
